The old rule of thumb is that annual boat ownership costs equal about 10% of the boat value — but this excludes loan payments. A more accurate estimate: maintenance and repairs run 10% of value, insurance 1.5-2%, and fuel varies widely. The two most expensive "hidden" costs are slip fees and depreciation. Boats depreciate fastest in the first 5 years (losing 30-40% of value). Ways to reduce costs: trailer instead of marina storage, DIY maintenance, join a boat club for shared expenses.
