How It Works

The USCG capacity plate shows maximum persons and maximum weight for boats under 26 feet. The persons number assumes 185 lbs per person (updated from 150 lbs in older formulas). Maximum weight includes people, gear, fuel, and outboard engine. Never exceed capacity — overloaded boats have reduced freeboard, poor stability, and are much more likely to capsize or swamp. In rough water, reduce capacity by 25-50%. Weight distribution matters too — keep heavy items low and centered.
