How It Works
Boats are far less fuel efficient than cars — 1-4 NMPG is typical for powerboats. Displacement hulls get the best fuel economy (2-4 NMPG) but are slower. Planing hulls burn more fuel in the transition zone (hump speed) but can be reasonable at optimal cruise. The most efficient speed for a planing hull is usually just above the point where it gets fully on plane. Sailboats under power typically get 3-6 NMPG.
