How It Works

Trolling is much more fuel-efficient than cruising — typically 0.5-2 GPH versus 10-20+ GPH at cruise. Most outboards troll at 600-1000 RPM. A dedicated trolling motor (electric or small kicker) is even more efficient. Four-stroke outboards are better at sustained low-RPM operation than two-strokes. Trolling plates help slow down larger engines that idle too fast for effective trolling.
